She lowered the card with pure confusion on her face. “I didn’t send this.”

“You’re the chef at Hotel Laguna Maldita?” Faraday asked.

She nodded. “Francesca Ward.”

“You’re an expert in Mexican cuisine?”

“I guess…I mean, I’m not sure about expert. You have a farm-to-table restaurant? You’re a talking squirrel.” This information was still hard for Francesca to digest. It was obvious.

“Yes, and my sidekick is a fairy godmother of sorts.” Then he added, “Although I believe Paris thinks of me as her sidekick. Don’t tell her it’s the other way around.”

Francesca mopped her brow with a cloth. “Oh my. Fairy godmothers, talking squirrels, mobsters, and ghosts…I can’t take anymore.”

“Did you say mobsters and ghosts?”

She nodded and pointed toward the dining room, where the commotion was getting louder. “Yeah, they took over the hotel today. Then the ghost…well, my husband says it’s the boiler acting up, but I think it’s an upset ghost.”

“I could take a look at the boiler if you’d like,” Faraday offered.

“You’re a squirrel,” she countered.

“A science experiment that went right, remember. I know things.”

“And you cook,” Francesca added.

“Well, no one else could take the internship opportunity when you sent it, so I was elected.”

“I didn’t send it.”

“Right,” Faraday chirped. “Someone lured me here. It sounds like you need help. Maybe I’ll stick around for a bit and keep an eye on things. Paris is on a solo mission suddenly and doesn’t need my help. So I might as well offer you my expertise. Like that boiler, for instance.”

Francesca waved him off. “A scientist checked into the hotel today and offered to take a look at it today.”

“Today…a scientist…” Faraday flicked his tail, thinking. “Yeah, I’ll need to look into this.”

“No one can see you running around this place,” Francesca said in a mad rush. “I mean, if anyone reported that we have rodents, well, that’s a huge problem. Then if someone sees a talking squirrel…well, we already have a ghost.”

“Leave it to me, Francesca. No one will see me. I’m the master of stealth. If you have a problem with your boiler or a ghost, I’ll find out immediately and help you.”

“You will?” She suddenly softened. “But why? Why help us?”

He smiled. “Because you seem like a good person, trying to follow your passion. And someone led me here to help you. I don’t know why or how, but my instinct tells me that I should trust it.”

“That’s a very odd thing for a squirrel to say,” she admitted after a long pause.

“I assure you that I almost never say what you’d expect a squirrel to say.”

“Which is nothing at all,” she added with a forced laugh.

Faraday laughed too.

Plato disappeared from the dark pantry, having put the last chess piece on the board. It was finally time to start playing the game. He only hoped that he’d set everything up perfectly because now he was out of the game and relying on his rook, bishop, and knight, hoping they were all ready to checkmate the other player’s king.
